“Mettle” is about my father’s service on the Atlantic Convoys in World War Two.
It is directed by long-time collaborator, Gavin Robertson.
It is a true story.
My father, like many, was silent about this time – until my parents’ golden wedding
anniversary, when he told me the stories of his service. It was fascinating, frightening
and crucially at times, funny – I learnt so much about my Dad in a couple of hours. It
explained a lot about his silence – and why so many of his generation felt the same.
I need to tell these stories now, because otherwise they’ll be lost. They need to be
told because nobody is telling stories about the Convoys. They also help us
contextualise stories of veterans today – and why support is so important. It was very
clear to me that my father had had no support for PTSD and had suffered as a result.
I’m partnering up with the Daparian Foundation who give support to ex-forces and
blue-lights who are undergoing trauma journeys.
